Devin Bull's Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained

Devin Bull hammered with sickness

No training these days.  Lying low, sleeping extra and taking it easy.  Got hammered with some heavy sickness.  Hopefully will be back to full speed in a week or so.  I am certainly not one of those people who gets sick once every 1 - 2 years.  Wish I was sometimes.  Devin.

Devin Bull on jogging to think

Whenever I jog it is great to clear head.  I don't really jog where I have to worry about anything - just along the beach.  I find it a really good time to go within and think about stuff.  It's kind of weird really, but it really works for me.

I used to run on the beach in bare feet.  Then I bought a pair of running shoes and the extra support made a big difference, even on the beach.

Haven't done any riding lately - too many cars on the road at this time of year.  Too many nut jobs who can't drive.  I figure a helmet is not going to do much good when your whole body is splattered across the road because some absent minded driver wasn't looking where they were going.

Not much swimming either.  Been surfing a bit though.  Surf has been good.  Devin Bull.

Devin Bull - forgetful me and figuring stuff out when you run

Somehow the blog intended for my surfing blog ended up here.  Not sure how that happened, perhaps I had too many windows opened.  Oh well, enjoy!  Devin

Been surfing more than training lately.  Been getting swell every 5 - 7 days, so I have just been working in between and doing some yoga stretching and light weights for fitness.

Surfing is a hell of a lot more interesting than riding a bike - although recently had my best bike time for a short ride 11.5km in 22:07.  That's in traffic too - adds to the buzz a bit - drivers here are bonkers.

I think my favorite activity out of running, swimming and riding (that triathlon stuff) is running.  Because you get to think and sort stuff out in your head (I am not someone running down the road bruising my brain with rock music).  You can't really go inside and  think too much when you're riding or you die.  And neither when you are swimming because of focusing more on what your body is doing (counting breathing, figuring out where you are in relation to where you are meant to be, etc. - I swim in the open ocean so if I am not focused I'll probably swim in circles). Devin Bull solo session - it's been a great end to 2010

Devin Bull solo surfing - again.  It's been a season with many3 hour long sessions with 50+ waves surfed and no one out.  Can't complain about that!  Devin surfing one of his favorite waves.

Devin Bull out for the count

Not too much training lately for Devin Bull.  Got sick with the flu and was in bed for almost one week.  First sickness in almost a year.   Right up until getting sick Devin was still training regularly.

Goal of Devin Bull current training regimen is to ride 20km each morning and swim 2km each afternoon.  Trying to work up to that.  Beginning with riding 12km each morning and swimming 800m each afternoon - the 12/800 combination is a little easier on time availability and still seems to have a good effect on fitness.

Thanks,  Devin Bull

Training with Devin Bull

Devin Bull has been busy with work.  Not too much time for training has Devin had.  Yesterday was a an 800 meter swim at 17m59s.  Bit of a disappointing time.  Goal is to get the swim time down to 15 minutes.  And it is 800m instead of 750 because Devin Bull measured it with his car odometer.  Did a 2km untimed quick run on the beach after the swim.

Devin Bull on the day before was on a 20km bike ride at 40m04s.  Again disappointing.  Used a different bike and was expecting a time under 40min.  Goal on the bike is to get it down to 35min.  If that is possible not sure.  But got stuck behind a couple of taxis on the last ride and it was too dangerous to blast past them, so maybe possible to knock off at least a few minutes.

Devin Bull completed first 2km swim

Devin Bull completed first 2km swim.  Swam in the ocean.  Time 46min.  Didn't use any goggles, definitely need to get a pair.  Freaks me out when I swim and bump into some trash in the water.  Dreading running into a live turd while swimming, see them on the beach sometimes from the fisherman.  Yuk.  Devin Bull

Devin Bull Sprint Triathlon training times

Devin Bull did the full triathlon on August 5.  Times were as follows:

Swim:  17min 33 sec       750 m
Trans:  1 min 10 sec
Bike:  41 min 17 sec         20km
Trans: 1 min 20 sec
Run: 23 min                         5km

Total time:  1:24:40 - a new record so far.

That's about the best times for Devin Bull so far.  Didn't take any hydration during this one.  Didn't feel anything lack from not taking hydration during it.

Devin Bull changing his mind again

Aaah . . .  the surf blog is over at http://blog.dabull.net/

This blog Devin Bull going to diary his efforts to participate in a triathlon. Devin is targeting the "sprint" version of the triathlon - 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run.  So far the times in training have been:

Devin Bull's best triathlon training time
Swim 17 min
Bike 43 min
Run 26 min

Total time 1hr 26 min.  Done three full ones so far and those are the best times.

Yesterday time was short before the sun sets and did a 12km ride and 2km run training "brick" or whatever someone called it.  The sensation of getting off the bike and trying to run with "jelly" legs is pretty unreal.  Takes 1 - 2 km just to feel strength in the legs again.

Devin Bull out.
